Is there anything I can do to help myself find a job? The answer is a resounding yes! If you’re unemployed, you know how difficult it can be to find gainful employment. You might not know it, but you are already doing most of the work of making sure you don’t fall into the unemployment line in the first place.
First off, do some job searches. Take time out to browse Craigslist and other websites. Look for jobs that interest you. It may not always be easy to find something, but if you do, the experience will help you tremendously when you start your job search. Find a few things you’d like to do before you leave the house. For example, go on a job search spree during the weekdays after work and during the weekends.
Next, make sure that you have a full folder set up for your job search. This folder should have a pen, paper, and anything else that would help you during your job search. This folder should contain all of the resume you send out, the cover letter, and any other materials that you think might be needed for the job. Even if you have nothing specifically needed for that day, it never hurts to have the rest of your materials ready.
Get help. Friends and family members may be able to give you advice on where to find employment, or even help you find a particular job. You can even pay someone for their help. It will definitely be worth it to save money for something that will actually make you more money.
Go to networking events. Most community organizations, small businesses, and professional organizations hold job fairs. Attend these functions. Most of the time, you will meet people who have what you need. These individuals may even be looking for a similar type of position that you do.
Go to college or learn a skill. If you have the drive and motivation, you can get the education or skills you need to get the job you want. If not, you can always take courses online to learn new things. The internet is always expanding with great job opportunities. Who knows?
Look in local classified ads. If you find a job that you think fits you and has the potential to bring you happiness, go ahead and drop by the local newspaper and post your resume. When people see your qualifications, they would most likely contact you to inquire further about your job.
Ask around. I had a boss who always asked around, “What’s up? Any jobs here you’d like?” It worked for him because he was always seeking new employees. So that should help you find a job for me!
Do something crazy. Sometimes going out of your way and doing something crazy just might get you the job you have always wanted. If you love animals, volunteer at an animal shelter. Or maybe you’ve always liked writing and you’re good at drawing. Think outside the box and you might be surprised at how successful you can be.
